I’m a Creative Director by title, but a graphic designer by nature. I still care about typography. I still obsess over composition. I still move things two pixels and then move them back. I like getting into the work, not just standing outside of it giving direction. But experience has taught me that craft works harder when there’s a strong idea underneath it. So I spend just as much time thinking about what a brand stands for, what it should say, where it fits in the world and why anyone should care. Brand positioning, creative strategy and storytelling aren’t separate from design to me. They’re what give design something worth communicating. My approach usually starts by making things simpler. Find the truth. Lose the jargon. Get to the idea people can actually understand and remember. Then build a visual and verbal world around it that feels distinctive, intentional and right for the brand. I like big strategic conversations. I like blank sheets of paper. I like building brand platforms and campaign ideas. And I still really like sitting down and designing the damn thing. That combination has become a pretty important part of how I work: think like a Creative Director, see like an Art Director and make like a Graphic Designer. Thirty years in, I’m still interested in the same thing that got me into this business in the first place—coming up with a strong idea and figuring out the most interesting way to bring it to life.
